Dates and venue: November 13–15, 2007, Paris, France
Number of exhibitors: more than 500 companies from 147 countries
Number of visitors: more than 20,000 specialists in the field of plastic cards and IT
On November 13–15, 2007, Paris hosted Cartes 2007 – the largest international exhibition of plastic cards, manufacturing and personalization equipment, and related IT technologies. More than 500 companies from 147 countries participated in the exhibition. More than 20,000 specialists in the field of plastic cards and IT attended this significant event.
A distinguishing feature of this Cartes was the presentation of numerous high-tech innovations and solutions. The EDAPS Consortium represented Ukraine and its leading edge technologies at the exhibition. (The Consortium also participated in the 2006 exhibition.)
This year, the Consortium’s delegation included representatives of EDAPS companies: Znak (plastic card manufacture), Polly-Service (installation and servicing of plastic card and document personalization equipment), and VTI (development, implementation, and maintenance of automated systems). Exhibits shown at the Consortium’s booth included the new Ukrainian travel passport, modern Ukrainian identification documents, bank cards and other cards.
Leaders of the Consortium and its companies conducted several rounds of negotiations with business and government representatives from France, Holland, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Brazil, and many other countries. As a result, they were able to reach a series of agreements with potential clients. Among them were companies that may use the EDAPS Consortium’s products and services, as well as leading suppliers in the field of plastic card manufacturing, biometric and information technologies, the manufacture of bank readers and terminals, as well as card and document personalization equipment.
The Consortium is actively expanding its presence in the global market and perfecting its technologies with the goal of creating an electronic state in Ukraine.
A conference held at Cartes 2007 gave industrialized nations an opportunity to present their technologies in the field of manufacturing modern identification documents. The EDAPS Consortium representatives’ presentation at the conference was entitled “The Ukrainian Citizen’s New Passport: Modern Technologies of Manufacturing and Personalizing Passports with a Polycarbonate Page.” As a system integrator working on the new Ukrainian travel passport project, the Consortium demonstrated its technologies which make possible the main principles for the creation of a modern international travel document:
- When used for visual identification control, the document must provide reliable and accurate identification of its holder;
- The document must provide verification of data in machine-reading systems.
The presenters noted that the new Ukrainian travel passport, developed and implemented by the EDAPS Consortium, is a result of effectively merging technologies of:
- Security printing on paper;
- Security printing on the passport’s polycarbonate page;
- Modern methods of document personalization by laser engraving and laser perforation.
In the course of the presentation, much attention was focused on the establishment of a personal data collection system in Ukraine, and on modern equipment for the State Document Personalization Center, a state-owned company operated by the Ukrainian MVD (Ministry of Internal Affairs), where personalization of travel documents is carried out.
The Ukrainian company’s presentation made a big impression on the conference participants. This was not the first time for the new Ukrainian travel passport to be highly rated by specialists in the field. Earlier this year the Consortium presented the new Ukrainian travel passport at the OSCE Conference and the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Symposium
